Socio Bosque prioritizes areas with the highest deforestation threat, the most important areas for carbon storage and other ecosystem services, and areas with the highest levels of poverty. Individuals or communities interested in participating can inscribe in the Program, and if they comply with requirements and conditions, an agreement is signed in which the participants commit to protect their forest in return of an economic incentive given by the State.

Through the use of remote sensing and random on site inspections, the compliance of beneficiaries is verified. Additionally, an integral deforestation and GHG emissions monitoring system is implemented at the national level. This way the effectiveness of the program is monitored.

The first agreements will be signed by the end of this year in the Amazon region and the province of Esmeraldas (area that have the highest deforestation rate in the country).

Additional to the funds allocated to Socio Bosque by the Government of Ecuador, the Program seeks complementary financial stability through a trust fund specifically created within the National Environmental Fund (Fondo Ambiental Nacional, FAN). Through this fund, donations can be received from countries or organizations, as well as economic incentives from a possible REDD mechanism, and allocated in a transparent manner.
